FREETOWN, Sierra Leone, Africa — A man was killed and four LDS missionaries were injured after a car crash in Sierra Leone, Africa, Wednesday, officials for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said.
Four missionaries, including two from Utah, and a member from a local congregation were traveling in a van on a highway when another vehicle attempted to pass a truck on that highway and hit their van, according to a statement released by LDS Church spokesman Eric Hawkins on Saturday.
Two of the men in the van were taken to a hospital in Ghana with “severe” injuries. Another two were recovering at a hospital in Sierra Leone and another was released from the hospital, according to Hawkins.
Hawkins said two missionaries from Utah were among those injured: Elder Luke P. Dunn of Salt Lake City and Elder Nicklaus M. Spaulding of Nibley.
Elder Augustine Biney-Amissah of Breman Asikuma, Ghana; Elder Isaac Boateng of Moree, Ghana; and brother Marcus Wallace of Sierra Leone were also injured in the crash, Hawkins said.
Hawkins did not specify which of the elders were taken to each hospital.
The driver of the other vehicle died in the crash.
“We pray for his family and loved ones as they mourn their loss,” Hawkins said.
The missionaries injured were serving in the Sierra Leone Freetown Mission.
