SOUTHAMPTON, England (AP) — Jay Rodriguez's late equalizer salvaged a 1-1 draw for Southampton against visiting Sunderland in the English Premier League on Saturday.
Deputy Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford allowed Rodriguez's strike from distance to squirm under his body with five minutes remaining.
Jermain Defoe looked to have set Sunderland on its way to its first victory of the season when he dusted himself off to convert a penalty five minutes beforehand, awarded after he was fouled by Southampton captain Jose Fonte.
Pickford, who was playing due to regular goalkeeper Vito Mannone's elbow injury, made smart saves to deny Charlie Austin, substitute Shane Long, and Nathan Redmond.
But Pickford's late error proved costly when Rodriguez claimed his first EPL goal since March 2014, leaving both sides waiting for their first wins.
