AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — The head of one of the rescue units looking for survivors of Wednesday's pre-dawn earthquake in central Italy acknowledges that time is running out for anyone still possibly trapped alive in rubble. The death toll stands at 281 so far. Search efforts are being complicated by aftershocks. There have been more than 1,000 and one of them was so powerful on Friday that it shut two vital roads.
GENEVA (AP) — Despite progress made in 10 hours of talks between the top diplomats from the U.S. and Russia, a truce to end the bloodshed in Syria isn't a done deal. Secretary of State John Kerry says negotiators in Geneva will keep at it. An accord must address the complex situation on the ground. Russia backs Syrian government attacks on opposition forces, some of which have links to an al-Qaida affiliate.
PARIS (AP) — France's top administrative court has overturned a ban on burkinis in a Mediterranean beach resort. The all-body swimsuits are worn my some Muslim women. The ruling means that towns can no longer issue bans on the swimsuits. The dispute over the clothing has divided the country and brought world attention to France's fraught relationship with Muslims.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The detection of the Zika virus in a blood donation made in Florida has prompted federal health officials to order all U.S. blood banks to start screening for the mosquito-borne virus. Previously testing for Zika was limited to parts of Florida and Puerto Rico. Officials say the infected blood was detected and remains in quarantine.
ESCONDIDO, Calif. (AP) — The Border Patrol says it's arrested two men they believe tried to smuggle $3 million in cash into Mexico from California. The agency says its agents tracked and stopped a car in Escondido, California, on Tuesday and found nearly $34,000 stashed in the car's center console. Authorities say another car sped off as the first vehicle was stopped but it was later found abandoned nearby. That car had more than $3 million packed in boxes in the trunk. Two suspects, one an American and the other from Mexico, were arrested.
