AMERICAN FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Law enforcement officials in eastern Idaho say a free-roaming pregnant horse thought to have been stabbed to death was actually killed by injuring itself.
Power County Sheriff's Office Lt. Kevin Ostler said Friday that investigators and a veterinarian determined that the mare ran into a low tree branch after getting spooked in the middle of the night. Officials do not know what spooked the animal.
Dee was a free-roaming 5- or 6-year-old mustang and was pregnant. She was expected to foal next month and was just hours away from going to her newly adopted home.
Owner Kimberly Clark found Dee dead on Sunday. The veterinarian said the horse's nasal cavity was shattered and she also suffered a wound to her side.
