GENEVA (AP) — Progress is being made toward a truce in Syria following marathon meetings in Geneva between Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov. Kerry says the talks "have achieved clarity" on a path to restore a truce. Experts will continue talks in Geneva. Kerry stressed the importance of keeping the details secret.
AMATRICE, Italy (AP) —Rescuers trying to find people alive in the ruins of three towns in central Italy wrecked by Wednesday's earthquake have two things going against them: time and aftershocks. They acknowledge that they might not find any more survivors. And there have been more than 1,000 aftershocks, both powerful and unnerving. 0ne caused the blockage of a key road. At least 281 people have been killed.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump has met with Latino supporters in Las Vegas to discuss a push to win the battleground state of Nevada. Trump convened about two dozen Latino supporters, local Republican leaders and campaign staffers Friday at his hotel just off the Vegas Strip. The meeting comes amid a new push from Trump to court Latino and African-American voters. But it also comes amid mixed signals from Trump on whether or not he would stick with a primary campaign promise to deport 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A federal judge has temporarily ruled that the University of North Carolina can't block two transgender students and an employee from using bathrooms that match their gender identity. A federal judge has partially granted a preliminary injunction to the students and the employee. The judge says the injunction only applies to the plaintiffs, but said he also expects them to succeed in their claim that the law known as H.B. 2 violates the federal Title IX law, which bars sex discrimination in schools.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Fresh-cut vegetables are being recalled from grocery, discount and convenience stores across the Southeast because the food may be contaminated with potentially fatal Listeria bacteria. Texas-based Country Fresh says the recall involves its vegetable products shipped to retailers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Some carry Country Fresh and store labels at Bi-Lo, Fresh Point, Harris Teeter, Publix, QuikTrip, Spinx, Wal-Mart and Winn-Dixie stores.
