SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities say a Utah inmate sentenced to prison as a teenager in the rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl has died after he was assaulted by his cellmate.

The Utah Department of Corrections said Carlos-Adrian Javier Hernandez died in a hospital early Friday morning. He'd been found unconscious the night before after guards heard suspicious noises coming from his cell at the facility in Gunnison, Utah.

Police suspect he was assaulted by a cellmate serving time for aggravated robbery and other charges.

The 24-year-old Hernandez was sentenced to up to life in prison in the 2007 death of Keely Amber Hall. She was found strangled to death in a St. George park.

Authorities said Hernandez had met her earlier in the day and killed her after she refused his sexual advances.
