SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Officials are warning people to avoid the murky American Fork Canyon after water tests revealed elevated lead levels in the sediment. The Utah Department of Environmental Quality said in a news release Friday that "caution" signs will be posted telling people to avoid wading in the water or walking along the banks. Children are most at risk.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Colorado mother enjoying a family boat trip across Lake Powell heard a scream and splash as her 2-year-old son slipped off their houseboat and into the water. Chelsey Russell, a 35-year-old mother of two, jumped in to rescue her son. She managed to keep the toddler above water for five minutes but passed out and died.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Jerry Brown is signing legislation to ban state transportation funding for new coal export terminals. Democratic Sen. Loni Hancock of Oakland introduced the bill in response to a developer's proposal to build a coal terminal in Oakland, but that project was effectively killed by the city council.
PANGUITCH, Utah (AP) — Officials say a tornado briefly touched down in southern Utah several miles outside of the city of Panguitch. Randy Graham, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, said a funnel cloud emerged Friday afternoon from storms over the rural area and touched down on the ground around 1:30 p.m. Graham says the tornado was only the ground for a few minutes and weather officials did not receive any reports of damage.
