AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — There've been more than 500 aftershocks following Wednesday's powerful and deadly earthquake in central Italy. The U.S. Geological Survey says one aftershock, with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7, struck Friday morning near the hard-hit town of Amatrice (ah-mah-TREE'-cheh), where rescue workers are still looking for victims from Wednesday. The death toll throughout central Italy stands at 250.
MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Donald Trump is accusing rival Hillary Clinton of painting "decent Americans as racists," a day after he called Clinton a "bigot." On Thursday, Clinton accused Trump of unleashing the "radical fringe" within the Republican Party, including anti-Semites and white supremacists, and she said Trump's campaign is one that will "make America hate again."
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's state-run news agency says at least eight police officers have been killed in a car-bomb attack at a checkpoint in southeast Turkey. The Anadolu Agency says 45 people were wounded in Friday's attack in a town in Sirnak province. The explosion hit a checkpoint some 50 yards from a police station.
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Forest fires are blanketing a swath of Southeast Asia in a smoky haze, prompting authorities to declare states of emergency in six Indonesian provinces. Singapore's air quality deteriorated to unhealthy levels Friday as winds blew smoke from fires on Sumatra across the city-state and into southern Malaysia. The haze is an annual problem for Southeast Asia, but last year's fires were the worst since 1997.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will expand a national monument off the coast of Hawaii, creating the world's largest marine protected area. The White House says Obama's proclamation on Friday will quadruple in size a monument created by President George W. Bush in 2006. The marine national monument will contain 582,578 square miles, more than twice the size of Texas.
