WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump is continuing to push back on allegations from rival Hillary Clinton that his candidacy has courted the "alt-right" movement. Trump told CNN that "nobody even knows what it is" and that he's embracing "common sense." Clinton said today that Trump is "pushing discredited conspiracy theories with racist undertones." Trump's new campaign CEO, Stephen Bannon, had previously said that the news site he oversaw, Breitbart News, was "the platform for the alt-right."

AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — New York City's World Trade Center is honoring the victims of the earthquake in Italy. Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed the building's 408-foot spire be lit in the colors of the country's flag - green, white and red. Wednesday's earthquake killed at least 250 people in Amatrice (ah-mah-TREE'-cheh) and other towns in central Italy. Cuomo says New York also stands ready to lend support.

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) — A court says a California judge who was criticized for ordering a lenient six-month jail sentence in a rape case against a former Stanford University swimmer will no longer hear criminal matters by his own request. Santa Clara County Judge Aaron Persky has been reassigned to handle civil cases.

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A police officer has died in a shooting in eastern Tennessee. Police in Maryville say the officer responded with a Blount County sheriff's deputy to a domestic disturbance. Officials in the Knoxville suburb say when the two arrived at a residence the suspect came out firing and fatally wounded the officer. The suspect was taken into custody.

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) — Army officials say a 101st Airborne Division soldier fired two shots at Fort Campbell and then fled in his vehicle before being apprehended by military police. A spokesman says the soldier entered a hangar and fired the shots. No injuries were reported.
