AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — The Venice International Film Festival says it's cancelling a traditional gala dinner and reception on the opening day of the festival in a gesture of solidarity with the victims of the earthquake in central Italy. The celebrations were to have taken place on a beach following the opening ceremony next Wednesday. The provisional death toll for the earthquake has risen to 250 people. Officials say the number of injured stands at 365.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The National Weather Service says a preliminary damage survey shows the EF3 tornado that hit Kokomo, Indiana, had an estimated peak wind of 152 mph. The weather service says the twister traveled nearly 5 miles on the city's south side Wednesday, was about 300 yards wide and lasted 10 minutes. It says the tornado destroyed a Starbucks near the Markland Mall.
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say a Navy warship ship fired three warning shots in the direction of an Iranian boat that was approaching another American ship head-on in the North Arabian Gulf on Wednesday. A spokesman for the Navy's 5th Fleet says the Iranian boat came within 200 yards of the USS Tempest and ignored several radio calls and warning flares. It finally turned away after the other Navy ship fired three warning shots from its .50-caliber gun.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine says Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's shifting positions on immigration can't be trusted. Speaking during a taping of CBS's "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," Kaine attacked Trump for wavering on whether immigrants here illegally must be deported. He said "I don't buy it," before saying in Spanish that Trump is always fighting against the Latino community.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Republican Party chairman for the county that includes the Texas state capital is out of a job after filing as a write-in candidate for president of the United States. The state party chairman says filing as a presidential candidate made Robert Morrow ineligible for his post. Morrow embarrassed Republicans when he was elected head of the GOP in Travis County ln March, despite his history of vulgarity and conspiracy theories.
