WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump is accusing Hillary Clinton of "using race-baiting" to lure black voters. Trump says Clinton is "pandering to the worst instincts in our society." That was his response to a Clinton speech today. Clinton said Trump is attempting to make America "hate again" and engaging in "a steady stream of bigotry" by associating with a far right movement that seeks to preserve "white identity." Clinton spoke in Reno, Nevada. Trump campaigned in New Hampshire.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The federal government and others who sued to overturn North Carolina's voter identification law have told the U.S. Supreme Court that keeping the photo ID mandate in place for the November elections would harm black voters and increase confusion. An appeals court ruled recently that the law, and a reduction in early voting days, intentionally targets black voters.

AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — Italy's civil protection service says the provisional death toll from the early Wednesday earthquake has risen to 250 people. It says the number of injured stands at 365. Searchers continue to look for survivors and victims in three devastated towns. A state news agency report one man was caught trying to loot homes in Amatrice (ah-mah-TREE'-cheh), one of the hard-hit towns.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say an American patrol ship in the North Arabian Gulf fired three warning shots in the direction of an Iranian boat that was approaching head-on today. The boat came within 200 yards of the USS Tempest and had ignored radio calls and warning flares before the shots were fired.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — It's too early to say how they were killed, but the bodies of two nuns have been found in their rural Mississippi home. Police in Durant, north of Jackson, say there were signs of a break-in and their car was missing. The women, both nurse practitioners, were found when they didn't report to work at a nearby hospital.
