KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — At least 13 people are dead after an hours-long militant attack on the American University of Afghanistan. The attack ended early today at the campus on the outskirts of Kabul. It underscored how militants are able to stage large-scale attacks -- even in the country's capital -- despite efforts by the Afghan authorities to improve security. Afghan authorities say the dead included seven students and one teacher. Three police officers and two security guards were also killed.
AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — A strong aftershock with a preliminary magnitude of 4.3 has hit an earthquake-struck area in Italy, causing more damage to buildings in a town nearly destroyed a day earlier. The aftershock caused one building to partially collapse, sending up plumes of smoke and panic in Amatrice (ah-mah-TREE'-cheh). Yesterday's earthquake killed at least 241 people in Amatrice and other towns in central Italy.
KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) — The mayor of Kokomo says crews from elsewhere in the state are coming to the central Indiana city to help restore power and clean up debris after a tornado. Mayor Greg Goodnight says he's grateful that no one was killed or seriously injured by the storm that struck yesterday afternoon, damaging numerous houses, apartments and businesses. Howard County Sheriff Steve Rogers says 10 to 15 people suffered minor injuries. Indiana's Department of Homeland Security says the storm produced at least 12 tornadoes across the state.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump's campaign manager says he's not adopting a position on immigration that is similar to the one put forward by Marco Rubio and other former Republican primary rivals. Kellyanne Conway tells CNN that Trump is "not for amnesty." But that's how she describes the proposal favored by Rubio and other senators that would provide a pathway to citizenship for some immigrants who are now in the country illegally.
NEW YORK (AP) — Stock indexes are opening slightly lower, while several companies fell sharply after reporting disappointing results. Dollar General dropped 11 percent in early trading after its earnings and revenue fell short of analysts' forecasts. The government reported this morning that slightly fewer people filed for U.S. unemployment benefits last week, a sign the American job market remains healthy.
