AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — Rescue crews are racing against time, looking for survivors from the earthquake that leveled three towns in central Italy. The death toll is at 247, but a firefighters' spokesman in the city of Amatrice (ah-mah-TREE'-chay) says, "We're still in a phase that allows us to hope we'll find people alive."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is launching a fresh bid to enlist Russia as a partner in Syria. Secretary of State John Kerry will meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov (SEHR'-gay LAHV'-rahf) later this week to try to hammer out a diplomatic initiative that would see greater cooperation that could lead to a resumption in talks on a political transition. But the U.S. says that before talks can begin Russia must use its influence with Syrian President Bashar Assad (bah-SHAR' AH'-sahd) to halt attacks on moderate forces and to open up humanitarian aid corridors.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards says residents trying to recover from recent flooding will be able to receive grants to make their damaged homes more habitable quicker. But those whose homes have more extensive damage will have to live in mobile homes. Edwards say it's "not the preferred option," but he says the trailers are different from the FEMA trailers after Hurricane Katrina.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea says surviving South Korean women who were forced into sexual slavery by Japan's military in World War II will be eligible to receive the equivalent of $90,000 each from a foundation that will be funded by the Japanese government. Seoul's Foreign Ministry says the families of deceased victims will be able to receive the equivalent of $18,000. South Korea and Japan agreed to set up the foundation in December as they settled a decades-long dispute over South Korean sex slave victims.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Authorities in New Zealand say a woman is in the hospital in reasonable health after surviving for a month on her own in the frozen wilderness. Authorities say the woman, from the Czech Republic, had left with her partner on July 26 on a 20-mile hike, which usually takes three days. But the couple became lost and the woman's partner fell to his death two days into the trek. The woman found shelter in a park warden's hut.
