ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish ground forces have entered Syria in what's being called an "intruder mission" against the Islamic State group. The private NTV television is reporting that Turkish special forces entered Syria today as part of a mission to clear the town of Jarablus of extremists. The Turkish government has not confirmed the report.
AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — At least 11 people have been killed in a strong earthquake in central Italy. The mayor of Amatrice (ah-mah-TREE'-cheh) says his town "isn't here anymore." Amatrice is one of the hardest-hit towns, where entire palazzos have crumbled to the ground as aftershocks continue. In the town of Accumoli (ah-KOO'-moh-lee), the mayor says at least six people are dead, including a family of four.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Florida has its first non-travel-related case of the Zika (ZEE'-kuh) virus outside the Miami area. But Gov. Rick Scott says there isn't enough evidence to declare a new zone of local transmission. Scott also says four new Zika cases are connected to mosquitoes in Miami's Wynwood arts district. And a fifth new case has been diagnosed in a Pinellas County resident.
TOKYO (AP) — The Olympic flag has arrived in Tokyo, host of the next Summer Games. Tokyo's governor held the flag as she got off a plane and stepped onto the tarmac. The governor received the flag at Sunday's closing ceremonies of the Rio Games from Rio's mayor and the president of the International Olympic Committee.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Are they prepared for college? The testing company that puts together the ACT college entrance exam says nearly two-thirds of this year's high school seniors took the test, and scores show that only 38 percent of them hit the college-prepared benchmark in at least three of the four core subjects tested: reading, English, math and science. That's down from 40 percent last year.
