ROME (AP) — The mayor of Accumoli (ah-KOO'-moh-lee), Italy says a family of four has been located under debris after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake followed by several aftershocks. The mayor in the central Italian town tells state-run Rai (ry) News24 that there don't appear to be signs of life in the rubble of the collapsed building. Officials say Accumoli and the town of Amatrice (ah-mah-TREE'-cheh) have been hardest hit by the quake.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's military and U.S.-backed coalition forces have launched an operation to clear a Syrian border town from Islamic State militants. The operation began hours after Turkey indicated it would step up its engagement in Syria.
PATTANI, Thailand (AP) — Two bombs have exploded near a hotel in southern Thailand, killing one person and wounding 29 others. Officials say Tuesday night's blasts were 20 minutes apart. The second explosion, in front of the hotel, killed a hotel restaurant worker. It is the fourth car bombing this year in the Muslim south, which is beset by a separatist insurgency.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Donald Trump is suggesting that he's open to "softening" laws dealing with people in the U.S. illegally. At a town hall hosted by Fox News, Trump said, "We're not looking to hurt people." Trump has repeatedly said that if elected, he would deport the 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally.
CLEVELAND (AP) — A chef who admitted shooting two housekeepers to death at an Ohio assisted living facility could spend the rest of his life behind bars. Fifty-six-year-old Frank Staton (STAT'-uhn) was sentenced Tuesday to 66 years to life in prison. He had pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and other charges. Staton told the judge in Cleveland that he didn't have an explanation for killing the two women before shooting himself. Prosecutors say one of the victims had been Staton's girlfriend.
