LOS ANGELES (AP) — A big three-game series opens up tonight in Los Angeles between the Dodgers and Giants. A check of the standings shows L.A. a game in front of the Giants for first place in the National League West. The pitching matchup has Madison Bumgarner going for the visitors against Kenta Maeda.

NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball's post season will start on Tuesday, Oct. 4 with the American League Wild Card game. The World Series will begin in the home of the American League champ on Tuesday, Oct. 25 with a seventh and deciding game, if necessary, scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 2.

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. Open starts next week and today the seeds were announced. As expected, the top seeds are once again Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich). Neither has played a match since early exits at the Rio Olympics.

GENEVA (AP) — The Court of Arbitration for Sport has ruled that the International Paralympic Committee did not violate any rules when it suspended the entire Russian team from the upcoming Paralympic Games in Brazil over doping issues. The Russians appealed to CAS and an attorney for the Russian athletes has been quoted on television as saying any future action is unlikely.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Six years ago the state of Rhode Island gave the video game company owned by former Boston pitcher Curt Schilling a $75 million loan guarantee. The company went belly-up and today the state reached a $25.6 million settlement with two of the financial backers it sued over the decision. The state says it's still in litigation with First Southwest Company and Schilling.
