MOAB — Grand County Dispatch was alerted Monday at 6 p.m. of a possible drowning at Big Bend about 7 miles upstream from Moab, Utah, police said.
Richard Daniel Lheureux, 21, from Hayward, California, had been swimming in the Big Bend area and was not wearing a life jacket, Grand County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
A group of people in the area heard the victim yelling for help and saw him go underwater, police said. Lheureux was estimated to have been 20 feet from the bank when he went underwater.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office and Grand County Search and Rescue responded to the area. A Lifeguard helicopter and sheriff’s office drone were flown and lights were set up on the river to monitor overnight activity.
The subject had not been located as of 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Four or five boats and about 25 employees from various teams have been working since the initial call around 6 p.m. Monday.
The search will continue with Grand County Search and Rescue and Park Service boats in the river until the victim is found or every effort has been exhausted, police said.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
