SAYREVILLE, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey police officer helped rescue a family from their burning home by catching them as they jumped out of a second-story window.
Patrolman Brian Gay was among the first to arrive at the scene in Sayreville Monday afternoon.
Gay says a young girl who was already outside told him that four more people were trapped on the second floor.
When he was unable to enter the home, Gay says he helped them escape through an upstairs window.
He says two young girls jumped into his arms. A woman then dropped him a baby boy, before climbing out using a ladder that neighbors had retrieved.
Officials say they all landed safely and were not seriously hurt.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
