AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — For the second time this month, transgender advocates have suffered a setback in court. A federal judge is putting on hold an Obama administration order requiring public schools to let transgender students use bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with their chosen gender identity. The judge says the federal law known as Title Nine makes it clear that gender is defined as "biological and anatomical differences" at birth. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ruled that a Virginia school board can block for now a transgender male from using the boys' restroom while justices decide whether to fully intervene.
AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Donald Trump is suggesting he would resume the practice of giving surplus military equipment to local police departments. The Obama administration banned police agencies from receiving military-grade equipment after 2014 protests in Ferguson, Missouri, over the death of Michael Brown, a black man, in a confrontation with police. Answering a question today in Akron, Ohio, Trump said, "I think it's ridiculous that they're not" given the equipment. He also said he believed that some rising crime is partly due to a decline in police manpower and vowed to change that.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Some emails that were sent or received by Hillary Clinton when she was secretary of state could end up being made public just before the November election. Lawyers for the State Department have told a federal judge that the department is now reviewing nearly 15,000 previously-undisclosed emails. They were recovered as part of the FBI investigation of Clinton's use of a private server. They say the first batch should be released in mid-October.
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have finished mostly lower in light trading, led by declines in energy stocks as the price of crude oil sinks. The Nasdaq notched a small gain as biotech companies rose, but other major indexes edged lower. The Dow fell 23 points. The S&P lost a point. The Nasdaq rose six points. Trading volume was very light, as it has been all month.
NEW YORK (AP) — A day after the end of the summer Olympics in Rio, three major sponsors have now ended their association with U.S. Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte. They include swimsuit company Speedo and clothing giant Ralph Lauren. A Speedo statement says, "We cannot condone behavior that is counter to the values this brand has long stood for." Lochte reported that he and three teammates were victims of an armed robbery in Rio, but he later revised that account of what police say was a confrontation with armed security guards at a gas station.
