BEIJING (AP) — Major global stock markets were mostly higher today as investors looked ahead to the Fed's meeting for clues on timing for possible interest rate hikes. Wall Street looked set for modest gains, with futures for the Dow Jones industrial average and Standard & Poor's 500 index up just under 0.1 percent.
UNDATED (AP) — Investors are looking ahead to a speech by Fed chair Janet Yellen at an annual summer gathering in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for indications of how policymakers view the outlook for economic growth and interest rates. Analysts expect Yellen to express caution but support the impression the U.S. central bank is on track to raise rates as early as this year.
BEIJING (AP) — China National Chemical Corp. says a U.S. national security panel has cleared its proposed acquisition of Swiss agrochemicals giant Syngenta. The $43 billion acquisition still requires approval from antitrust and other regulators in the United States and other countries. If completed, the deal would be the biggest foreign acquisition to date by a Chinese company.
BERLIN (AP) — A member of Volkswagen's supervisory board is calling for a quick solution to a legal dispute between the automaker and two suppliers that has forced VW to suspend production of some models at German plants. Volkswagen said last week that it would have to suspend production of the Golf and Passat at the Wolfsburg and Emden plants for around a week because the suppliers weren't delivering parts.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The California Supreme Court is set to rule on the legality of the state's ban on the use of suction dredges to extract gold from rivers. At issue in the decision expected today is whether the ban is overruled by a 19th century federal law that allows mining of gold and other minerals on federal land. Suction dredges are powerful underwater vacuums that suck up rocks, gravel and sand from riverbeds to filter out gold.
