WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is back at the White House, rested and ready after a two-week vacation. The president will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, tomorrow to comfort flood victims. After visiting Louisiana, the president heads to Nevada on Aug. 31 to discuss environmental protection at the Lake Tahoe Summit. He follows with a trip to China and Laos from Sept. 2-9.
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities have lifted all evacuation orders affecting thousands of people in Southern California less than a week after a wildfire raged through mountainous terrain. Meanwhile, firefighters are battling fast-moving wildfires in eastern Washington state that have destroyed homes and forced hundreds of residents to flee.
MIAMI (AP) — A top federal health official says the Zika (ZEE'-kuh) virus could "hang around" the United States for a year or two. Dr. Anthony Fauci (FOW'-chee) tells ABC's "This Week" that other Gulf Coast states besides Florida are most vulnerable to the spread of the disease. Fauci says mosquito control is the best way to stop the spread of the Zika virus, which can cause severe birth defects.
BEIRUT (AP) — Iran's foreign ministry spokesman says Russia will stop using an Iranian air base for airstrikes in Syria for the time being. The spokesman told reporters the Russian airstrikes on militants in Syria were "temporary, based on a Russian request." Iranian authorities have been less than pleased at the amount of publicity surrounding Russia's use of the Iranian air base.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea and the United States have begun annual military drills. North Korea is threatening nuclear strikes in response to what it calls an invasion rehearsal. Such fiery rhetoric from the North is not unusual. But the latest warning comes at a time of more tension following the defection of a senior North Korean diplomat and a U.S. plan to place a high-tech missile defense system in South Korea.
