MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A legislative panel that oversees Vermont's corrections system plans to hear from officials in two other states on how best to respond to mental health challenges presented by some inmates.
The Legislature's Joint Justice Oversight Committee plans to talk on Tuesday with officials from Pennsylvania and Nevada about segregation of inmates with mental illness.
Other topics on the agenda for the committee's meeting include a discussion of gender-based disparities in sentencing and detention of people caught up in the criminal justice system.
In addition, the panel plans to revisit an issue it's discussed before — how school discipline practices can help perpetuate a pattern of young people getting in trouble.
