SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Highway Patrol Col. Michael Rapich gives Jack Barney, son of fallen officer Doug Barney, his badge after a Sunday ceremony in which Salt Lake City Police Department Explorers were given the Guardians of the Fallen pins at the Utah Law Enforcement Memorial at the state Capitol.
The pins were presented by the children of the fallen to the next generation of law enforcement officers during the Utah Law Enforcement Memorial Ride for the Fallen. The Utah Law Enforcement Memorial board of directors created the pin for the Explorers, who have watched over the memorial since November 2013.
As “Guardians of the Fallen,” the all-volunteer group of young men and women, ages 14-20, clean and watch over the memorial every week.
The children of the fallen who participated in the ceremony included Ben Johnson, son of Draper Police Sgt. Derek Johnson; Shea Wride, son of Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Cory Wride; and Jack and Merri Barney, the son and daughter of Unified police officer Doug Barney.
