SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Chargers put two players on injured reserve after they were hurt in Friday's game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Tight end Jeff Cumberland (left Achilles) and guard Donavan Clark (right knee) suffered season-ending injuries in San Diego's 19-3 win over Arizona.
Cumberland was fighting for a roster spot at a deep position. Clark's status had risen of late with his improved play.
"He was very disappointed," coach Mike McCoy said of Clark. "As we all are."
The Chargers have an extra day of practice this week with their next game on Aug. 28 at the Minnesota Vikings.
San Diego broke training camp on Saturday, which featured two joint practices with the Cardinals before Friday's game.
According to McCoy, the only drawback from those sessions was Cardinals coach Bruce Arians missing some of the workouts after being hospitalized because of stomach pain.
"Unfortunately Bruce wasn't there but we were one team for those two days, trying to prepare for the upcoming season," McCoy said. "For us it was a great experience because we got to see our players play against a very good football team."
The Chargers are trying to rebound from a 4-12 season, their worst year since 2003.
"Whenever you go against a good team like that, it helps your team," McCoy said. "It was a positive experience for us and we will look into doing it in the future."
