MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Florida officials say five new Zika infections believed to have been transmitted by mosquitoes have turned up in the Miami area. Gov. Rick Scott says the area encompasses most of tourist-friendly South Beach. He says two of the cases in Miami Beach involved Miami-Dade County residents, and three involved tourists from New York, Texas and Taiwan. Another infection zone was previously identified in Miami's Wynwood arts district. Scott says the county has begun an aggressive mosquito eradication plan in Miami Beach.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Donald Trump has received a warm welcome while touring flood damage in Louisiana. The GOP nominee and his running mate Mike Pence were greeted by a crowd of supporters after visiting a Baptist church in East Baton Rouge Parish where volunteers were helping flood victims. Trump shook hands, signed hats, asked questions about the extent of the damage and thanked volunteers for their efforts. But he turned down a plate of jambalaya that was offered to him.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says he sent Hillary Clinton a memo touting his use of a personal email account after she became secretary of state in 2009. In a statement to The Associated Press, Powell says he emailed Clinton describing his use of a personal AOL account for unclassified messages when he led the State Department under President George W. Bush. Powell says he told Clinton his use of personal email "vastly improved" communications within the department, which he says did not have an equivalent internal system at the time.

SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) — Investigators are blaming natural gas for an explosion and fire that killed seven people at a Maryland apartment building. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says the Aug. 10 explosion occurred in the meter room of the building in Silver Spring, and a gas-fed fire consumed the apartments above and next door. It's not clear what ignited the gas, but officials say there's no indication of a criminal act. Police say investigators have identified three of the seven people killed in the fire and they don't believe there are any additional victims.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey officials say one bus driver is dead and another injured after one commuter bus slammed into another this morning in Newark. Seventeen passengers on one bus were injured, seven of them critically. But the transit police chief says all of the injured are expected to survive. Investigators are trying to determine if the bus driver who was killed ran a red light at the intersection.
