FONTANA, Calif. (AP) — Officials in California say residents are increasingly ignoring evacuation orders as the region faces what could be its most hazardous fire season on record. Only about half of the more than 4,500 residents of Wrightwood heeded evacuation orders this week as surrounding forests were engulfed in flames east of Los Angeles. U.S. Forest Service spokesman John Miller says more homeowners are staying put and dialing 911 for help, but rescue workers can't always reach them.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A federal judge has definitively blocked a Florida abortion law that prevents state funds from going to organizations that provide abortions. Planned Parenthood had challenged three parts of the law, and U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle had placed a temporary hold on those parts hours before the law took effect last June. Florida Gov. Rick Scott's administration has decided to stop fighting the issue in court.
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Tests in New Zealand confirm that an 89-year-old woman who died last week contracted the type of bacteria that tainted local tap water in a small North Island town, sickening thousands of people. An estimated 4,000 people in Havelock North have contracted gastric illnesses since last week's outbreak of campylobacter bacteria. Seventeen people are being treated in a hospital, including two who are in critical condition.
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece's coast guard says it's rescued dozens of migrants whose boat ran aground on a deserted islet off the coast of southwestern Greece. The coast guard says the boat was carrying about 70 people. Coast guard vessels picked up the migrants Friday morning, ferrying them to the mainland where they'll be registered.
