SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters have been making some progress in battling a huge wildfire 60 miles east of Los Angeles. The fire has burned 56 square miles but is now 22 percent contained. Meanwhile, a new fire broke out in rural Santa Barbara County, quickly surging to about 500 acres and prompting the evacuation of two campgrounds.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A disappointment for Usain Bolt. The Jamaican runner finished the Olympic 200 meters .59 short of his own world record, which he said he really wanted to break. But for just about everyone else, Bolt was a winner Thursday night, seizing his eighth Olympic gold medal and third straight 200 title.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — USA Swimming is blaming an embarrassing Ryan Lochte debacle on "a lapse in judgment and conduct." Reports say the Olympic swimmer lied when he said he and three of his teammates were robbed in Rio after a late night of partying. Brazilian authorities say the four were not robbed and had vandalized a gas station bathroom. The U.S. Olympic Committee has apologized.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico's human rights agency is accusing federal police of executing at least 22 people during a confrontation with suspected cartel criminals last year and then rearranging the scene to support the official version of what happened. Twenty other people were killed on May 22, 2015 a ranch in western Mexico. The National Human Rights Commission says four more deaths were caused by excessive force by federal police. Mexico's national security commissioner disputes the commission's findings.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Former Joint Chiefs Chairman John Vessey has died at age 94. Vessey was named joint chiefs chairman in 1982, and helped oversee the military buildup that President Ronald Reagan championed. Vessey's daughter says her father died of natural causes Thursday evening.
