BOSTON (AP) — A new documentary premiering next month on Discovery focuses fresh attention on Canada's bloody seal hunt.

But the film produced by the International Fund for Animal Welfare almost didn't get made. The producers say it includes grainy but powerful archive footage that had languished in the basement of the group's headquarters on Cape Cod for nearly five decades.

"Huntwatch" takes a hard look at the annual slaughter of thousands of baby harp seals — a hunt subsidized by the Canadian government.

It's narrated by Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds and was screened earlier this year at festivals in New York City; Boulder, Colorado; Newport Beach, California; and Middlebury, Vermont.

"Huntwatch" premieres at 10 p.m. EDT on Sept. 22 on Discovery.
