GENEVA, N.Y. (AP) — The longtime president of Hobart and William Smith Colleges has announced he'll be stepping down next year, ending his stint as the school's longest-serving president.
The liberal arts college in Geneva, in the Finger Lakes region, announced on Wednesday that Mark Gearan plans to leave after the 2016-17 academic year to accept an appointment at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education.
The New York school says at Harvard Gearan will be "working on important issues facing higher education and the next generation of leaders."
The native of Gardner, Massachusetts, became one of the nation's youngest college presidents when he took over the position at Hobart and William Smith in 1999.
Gearan earned a B.A. in government from Harvard and a law degree from Georgetown University.
A search will be launched to replace him.
