HOUSTON (AP) — A California educator has taken charge of the largest public school system in Texas.
Richard Carranza took over as superintendent of the Houston Independent School District after the district board voted unanimously on Thursday to approve his hiring. The board had voted to make Carranza the sole finalist for the job on July 27.
Carranza had been superintendent of the 53,000-student San Francisco Unified School District. He succeeds Terry Grier, who in February retired as superintendent of the HISD, which has about 215,000 students.
