SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Southern California's big wildfire continues to grow. The fire command says the destructive blaze 60 miles east of Los Angeles has scorched more than 49 square miles, up from 40 square miles last night. Firefighters continue to battle flames that have climbed the rugged flanks of the San Gabriel Mountains, threatening communities including the ski town of Wrightwood at an elevation of nearly 6,000 feet. The fire erupted Tuesday morning and spread rapidly. Firefighters have yet to tally property losses but indicate there have been many.
MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian military says it's ready to back a U.N. call for weekly 48-hour cease-fires to allow humanitarian aid deliveries to the embattled Syrian city of Aleppo. A Defense Ministry spokesman says Russia is ready to support aid deliveries starting next week. But he says the aid convoys should travel both to rebel-controlled and government-controlled parts of the city.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — At least 11 people are dead and more than 200 others wounded after a string of bombings targeting security forces in Turkey. Officials blame the attacks on Kurdish rebels. Two of the attacks were car bombings that hit police stations in eastern turkey. A third targeted a military vehicle carrying soldiers.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The British Olympic team says an athlete was robbed while returning to the team's quarters in Rio de Janeiro. The team was responding to a report in the Guardian that the unnamed athlete was held up at gunpoint after a night out in Rio. Meanwhile, Brazilian authorities continue to investigate the claim by U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte (LAHK'-tee) and three teammates that they were the victims of an armed robbery. Lochte has left Brazil, but the other three are expected to meet with law enforcement today.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Former NFL star Darren Sharper has been sentenced to 18 years in prison. Sharper pleaded no-contest in federal court and in four state courts to charges arising from allegations of drugging and raping women. Prosecutors had suggested a 9-year prison term for Sharper, but the judge rejected it as too lenient.
