IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Several police officers in Idaho Falls are suing the city and police department, arguing that the police chief violated policies regarding promotions to the rank of sergeant.
The seven officers say Chief Mark McBride didn't follow the rules set up to govern the hiring, firing and disciplinary procedures for police and firefighters, reported the Post Register (http://bit.ly/2b3vgLn ).
"The lawsuit is really only intended to ensure that officers are treated fairly through this process. That's the only goal," said Dennis Wilkinson, an attorney for the Idaho Falls Fraternal Order of Police who represents the officers. "The officers in this case followed the rules, and they want the same from the city."
The civil service rules charge the Civil Service Commission with evaluating applicants' eligibility and sending the names of the three most qualified candidates to the department for possible appointment.
The officers' lawsuit calims that McBride removed names from the list so he could promote less qualified candidates. Officers Tim Downs, Spencer Steele, Josh Deede, Eric Anderson, Kyle Christopherson, Leendert Van Hulten and Stephen Avery filed the suit Wednesday.
Efforts to reach police department officials were unsuccessful.
