NEWINGTON, Conn. (AP) — With just two weeks until the new academic year was set to begin, a Catholic elementary school in Newington has announced plans to close immediately due to a lack of funding.
Saint Mary School officials informed parents and teachers of the closure on Wednesday night.
The Rev. Shawn Daly, the newly-appointed Saint Mary Parish and school administrator, says the school would've ran out of money halfway through the year if it had opened.
There were 109 students enrolled for the coming year, just one-third of the school's capacity. Officials hope parents would consider sending their children to St. Brigid-St. Augustine Partnership School in West Hartford.
Full-time teachers with ministerial agreements will be offered jobs at the partnership school. Part-time employees will be hired as needed.
