HONOLULU (AP) — The Hawaii state Department of Health has identified 38 new cases of hepatitis A in the islands, bringing the total sickened by the outbreak to over 200.
The department said Wednesday all those who contracted the virus were adults.
Health officials on Monday identified frozen scallops served raw at a sushi chain as the probable source of the outbreak. They ordered 11 Genki Sushi restaurants on Oahu and Kauai to close.
Genki Sushi will be allowed to reopen the restaurants after they're disinfected. The chain's restaurants on Maui and the Big Island are being allowed to stay open because there's been no verification that they received shipments of the scallops.
To date, 206 people have been sickened by the virus in Hawaii.
