LATROBE, Pa. (AP) — Steelers linebacker James Harrison says he won't cooperate with the NFL as it investigates a report that he and some other linebackers in the league used performance-enhancing drugs. The NFL's senior vice president of labor policy and league affairs sent a letter Monday to the NFL Players Association detailing a plan to indefinitely suspend Harrison, Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers of the Packers and free agent Mike Neal if they don't speak with the league by Aug. 25. Harrison says he won't answer questions just because of a report, adding that he is prepared to take the situation as far as Tom Brady did.
PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press that Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus has been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Dareus is five-year starter since being selected with the No. 3 pick in the 2011 draft. The Bills signed him to the most expensive contract in team history last summer, a seven-year deal that is potentially worth $104 million.
UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals will have to make do without outfielder Matt Holliday and reliever Seth Maness (MAY'-nehs) as they try to capture an NL wild-card berth. Holliday will undergo right thumb surgery that could sideline him for the rest of the regular season. Maness is slated for season-ending Tommy John surgery after becoming one of 12 Redbirds on the disabled list.
ATLANTA (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have added infield depth by acquiring shortstop Erick Aybar (EYE'-bahr) from Atlanta for a minor league catcher. Aybar is hitting .242 with two home runs and 26 RBIs this season, the final year of his contract. He gives the Tigers experience at shortstop as Jose Iglesias recovers from a hamstring injury.
