HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — A man and woman in south Mississippi are charged with felony child neglect after their 7-week-old baby was found dead in an apartment.
Martina Cecile Fillingane and Robert Howard Ashcraft, who are both 40 and live in Hattiesburg, were charged Monday and remained in jail Tuesday, awaiting an initial court appearance Wednesday.
It was not immediately clear whether either one has an attorney.
Lt. Jon Traxler, spokesman for the Hattiesburg Police Department, says officers were called Monday about an unresponsive baby at the apartment, and that they found that couple's 7-week-old daughter, River Ashcraft, was dead.
Traxler says the baby's body was sent to the state Crime Lab for an autopsy.
He would not release details about why the parents were charged with neglect.
