BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Eight deaths are now attributed to the storms and flooding in south Louisiana. The latest confirmed death occurred in East Baton Rouge Parish, where the body of a 66-year-old man was found. Officials say it was an "accidental drowning" related to the storm. Floodwaters are receding in many parts of south Louisiana, though they are continuing to rise in other areas as the water drains south.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Police in Milwaukee say they arrested 10 people overnight but that the city's north side was much calmer than over the weekend when violent protests over the fatal shooting of a black man rocked the area. Six businesses were burned Saturday night, the first and worst night of the unrest. Police say the man who was shot Saturday was fleeing from police and had turned with a gun in hand toward the pursuing officer, who was also black. The state is investigating.
CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago Police spokesman says the city's Inspector General's office has delivered a report on the fatal 2014 police shooting of black teenager Laquan McDonald. The department is said to be reviewing the report. The news comes as the department announces the retirement Deputy Chief David McNaughton, who determined the shooting by Officer Jason Van Dyke complied with department policy. Those findings were harshly criticized when the video was released in November that showed McDonald didn't threaten officers. Van Dyke has been charged with first-degree murder.
BAGHDAD (AP) — A U.S. military spokesman says Russia notified the U.S.-led coalition shortly before Russian warplanes took off from Iran today to bomb Islamic State militants in Syria. According to Syrian opposition monitoring groups, an airstrike on a city in eastern Syria -- in a neighborhood held by the Islamic State group -- has left ten people dead. They also say a wave of airstrikes on rebel-held parts of the northern city of Aleppo have killed at least 15 civilians and wounded many others.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — American gold medal winners Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky and Simone Biles are featured on the cover of this week's Sports Illustrated. The magazine revealed the cover on its website today. It shows Phelps with his arms around Ledecky and Biles. They each have gold medals draped around their necks — a combined total of 14. Sports Illustrated says the photo was taken Sunday in Rio de Janeiro.
