RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — American Simone Biles had to settle for bronze in the balance beam yesterday after capturing three golds in gymnastics at the Rio Games. Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands won the event with a score of 15.466 to finish well ahead of Biles, who was trying to become the first female gymnast to win five gold medals in a single Olympics. Laurie Hernandez of the U.S. took silver with a score of 15.333.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Shaunae Miller of Bahamas dove to the finish line to win the women's 400-meter final, preventing American Allyson Felix from capturing a fifth Olympic gold medal. Miller finished in 49.44, just seven-hundredths of a second ahead of Felix. Colorado's Emma Coburn took bronze in the women's 3000 steeplechase, becoming the first American woman to medal in the event.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Middle distance runner David Rudisha of Kenya won gold in the 800 meters, finishing in 1 minute, 42.15 seconds. Clayton Murphy of the United States set a personal best of 1:42.93 for bronze. And two-time Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown has missed out on qualifying for the semifinals in the women's 200 meters.

The Blue Jays share first place with Baltimore after Chad Green held Toronto to a pair of hits over six innings in the New York Yankees' 1-0 shutout. SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — 49ers backup quarterback Thad Lewis will miss the entire season after tearing knee ligaments during Sunday's preseason game against Houston. Coach Chip Kelly said Lewis tore his ACL on a scramble and will need season-ending surgery.
