SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah State Prison inmate has admitted to charges related to the death of another inmate.
The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/2b7Wh0o ) that 27-year-old Samuel Wise pleaded guilty Monday to assault by a prisoner and negligent homicide. He had initially faced a more severe charge of homicide in the September 2014 death of Christopher Lucas.
Charging papers say Wise was upset that Lucas was making too much noise in a neighboring cell, so he attacked him when the cell doors opened. The report says Wise didn't stop beating Lucas until after guards sprayed more than two cans of pepper spray and shot 14 pepper balls at his back.
An autopsy determined heart failure and pepper spray contributed to Lucas' death. A prison review confirmed the guards acted appropriately.
