YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — Donald Trump is proposing an immigration policy which would feature "extreme vetting" and an ideological test for admission to the United States. Trump, in a foreign policy speech today in Ohio, claimed that many recent terror attacks in the U.S. have been carried out by immigrants or the children of immigrants. He said he would temporarily suspend immigration from nations with a history of "exporting terrorism" and would ask the State Department for a list of regions where screening is not currently adequate.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate's Democratic leader says Donald Trump should take the naturalization test that all immigrants go through to become citizens, as the Republican presidential nominee pushes new tests on those trying to enter the United States. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada says Trump almost certainly would fail the test. Reid says, "Immigrants make America great. Trump makes America small, petty and mean."

NEW YORK (AP) — The anger of a New York Muslim community has been evident at a funeral service for a slain imam and his friend who were shot by an unidentified gunman near their mosque. About 1,000 people, including New York City's mayor, gathered today for the prayer service for the two men. The motive of the gunman remains unknown, but the ceremony featured several speakers who said they believed the victims were targeted because of their religion. Some members of the congregation shouted for "justice." Police investigating the slayings have detained a man as part of an attempt to identify a vehicle seen leaving the scene of the shooting.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are closing higher, lifted to a record by rising energy prices. Chemical and machinery makers got a big lift, as did energy producers. Home builders gained on the back of a survey showing builder sentiment is on the rise along with the sales of new homes. The Dow gained 59 points, while the S&P finished 6 points higher. The Nasdaq is up 29 points.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — More than 11,000 people remain in shelters after flooding forced rescues and evacuations in southern Louisiana. The state Department of Children and Family Services says people continue to arrive at shelters today as new parts of Baton Rouge, its suburbs and other areas took on water draining from other hard-hit neighborhoods.
