PERRYVILLE, Ark. (AP) — The superintendent of the Perryville School District says a bus driver averted a disaster on the first day of school.

Superintendent Walt Davis says the bus ran off Arkansas 9 near the Fourche La Fave River on Monday morning but that the bus driver was able to keep the bus upright and out of the water. Arkansas State Police are investigating.

Davis says a few minor injuries were reported but that most children went on to school after the incident.

State Police spokesman Bill Sadler says there was no word on whether any other vehicles were involved. Davis says it was possible the driver tried to avoid another wreck.

Davis says the district was "very, very blessed" that no student was hurt seriously.
