LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — The sun is shining in Lafayette, Louisiana, but flood waters remain high across the heart of Acadiana. The National Weather Service says the Vermilion River, which runs through Lafayette, remains at its crest of 17.5 feet. The flood stage is 10 feet. Forecasters say the river should start to recede late tonight. They say there's a chance of more rain all week, but the individual systems shouldn't produce more than a half-inch and will have little or no effect on the flooding situation.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Police say an 18-year-old Milwaukee man was seriously wounded when he was shot during a late night protest over the police killing of a black man. They say the man was shot during a second night of unrest in the Sherman Park neighborhood on Milwaukee's north side. Officers used an armored vehicle to retrieve the injured man and take him to a hospital. Police say they are seeking suspects in the shooting. About two dozen officers in riot gear confronted protesters who were throwing rocks and other objects at police near where Sylville Smith was killed Saturday. There was no repeat of the widespread destruction of property that marred Saturday night's unrest.
MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) — Police say two teens who were arrested after a shooting that left one officer wounded in an Atlanta suburb are gang members. They say Officer Scott Davis was shot in the leg early yesterday while responding to a call of people breaking into cars at an apartment complex. He's recovering after surgery. Police say one teen began shooting from inside a vehicle as officers approached. Davis was hit, and three officers returned fire, hitting one of the teens. Two 15-year-old suspects were arrested. The wounded one was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
HOUSTON (AP) — Authorities say a Houston mother who calmly told an acquaintance that she drowned her two children in a bathtub is being held without bond in the deaths. Harris County criminal court records show Sheborah Thomas is behind bars on a charge of capital murder of a person under age 6. She was arrested yesterday after the bodies of her 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter were found under a neighbor's house.
