CLERMONT, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in Florida say a man who fired upon deputies is recovering after having been shot.

Lake County Sgt. Fred Jones tells news outlets that 42-year-old Michael Carroll fired multiple rifle shots at deputies who were responding to a domestic violence call early Sunday. Deputies fired back, wounding the suspect.

Officials say Carroll was in stable condition at a hospital. It's unclear how many times he was shot or where.

Authorities did not release Carroll's race or the races of the deputies who fired at him.

Jones says the incident started when authorities got a call from a woman who said she was punched in the eye during a fight between her son and husband.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
