SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) — Authorities in Maryland say there are still people missing after Wednesday's explosion and fire at an apartment complex in Silver Spring. Five bodies have been recovered from debris, and authorities say at least four of them were among eight people unaccounted for. Two of the victims recovered were 3 and 8 years old.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee police say the black man fatally shot by a Milwaukee police officer on Saturday had a "lengthy criminal record." Court records dating back to 2013 show that Sylville Smith had been charged with something as minor as retail theft to as serious as a shooting last year. Rioting broke out in Milwaukee following the shooting of the man, who police say ran off during a traffic stop. Police say the man had a gun in his hand when he turned toward an officer.
HOUSTON (AP) — Authorities in Houston say the mother of two children found dead Sunday under a neighbor's house admitted that she had drowned the children in a bathtub. Sheborah Thomas is charged with capital murder in the deaths of her 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter. Police say they haven't determined how the children died, but that Thomas told a man helping her move that she had drowned them. The man just thought she was joking.
NEW YORK (AP) — A Muslim advocacy group is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman who killed a New York City mosque leader and his associate. Police say 55-year-old Imam Maulama Akonjee and 64-year-old Thara Uddin were shot near a mosque in Queens as they left afternoon prayers Saturday. On Monday, the Council on American-Islamic Relations will announce a $10,000 reward.
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Health officials in New Zealand say tainted tap water has sickened hundreds of people in a small town and has forced schools to close. Officials say two patients are in a critical condition and 19 others are hospitalized after testing positive for campylobacter bacteria in Havelock North, on New Zealand's North Island.
