SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Donald Trump is making a pitch to Utah voters who have been reluctant to back him with a guest editorial in the same Mormon church-owned newspaper that Hillary Clinton used last week to appeal to residents. The Republican presidential nominee's guest editorial Monday in the Deseret News said his top priority is earning the trust of voters.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's Permanent State School Fund has posted record earnings, with a balance exceeding $2 billion in fiscal year 2016. The Deseret News reports that state Treasurer David Damschen says the fund grew by $43.9 million, or nearly 8 percent, from last year.

ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — A botanical garden in southwestern Utah is closing for a week to allow for the removal of illegally introduced goldfish and other popular pet species. The Spectrum reports that Steve Meismer with the Virgin River Program says the illegally introduced fish at the Red Hills Deseret Garden now outnumber and threaten the endangered native fish.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — A Utah man whose murder conviction in his wife's death was overturned asked Monday to be released from jail before he goes back on trial. Conrad Truman got the new Nov. 1 trial date during his first court appearance since a judge tossed out the guilty verdict, the Daily Herald reported (http://bit.ly/2b7mXyH). His lawyers argue that he's now presumed innocent again, so there's no reason to keep him behind bars.
