RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State University has received a $45 million grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation for its planned $160 million plant research complex.
The university announced that the grant is the largest ever to N.C. State's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and one of the largest in the history of the entire university.
The Golden LEAF Foundation distributes proceeds from the state's settlement with cigarette manufacturers to help rural communities that have been dependent in the past on growing tobacco.
The new research center, which should be open in five years, is a partnership between the university and the state Agriculture Department. It is envisioned to help make the state a leader in innovations in plant science.
