PASO ROBLES, Calif. (AP) — Evacuations have been ordered in a lakeside community in central California ahead of a fast-moving wildfire. Officials say the blaze broke out yesterday afternoon in the rolling hills south of Lake Nacimiento, about 230 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Meanwhile, fire crews in the northern part of the state are battling a rapidly spreading blaze that's threatening homes in the Lower Lake area.
NEW YORK (AP) — Members of the Bangladeshi Muslim community in New York City are asking police to treat the killings of an imam and his friend as a hate crime. They held a rally at the Queens site where the men were fatally shot while walking home from a mosque yesterday. Police haven't determined a motive and say there's no indication the men were targeted because of their faith. They've released a sketch of a suspect.
JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — Five people, including three in a church van, were injured by a shooter in Joplin, Missouri. Police say a suspect is in custody. A woman who was in the church van says the group didn't know what was happening when the gunfire erupted. She says one of the bullets hit her husband's lung, and that he's hospitalized in critical condition.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The police chief in Raleigh. North Carolina, says investigators are still trying to determine whether there was a shooting at a busy mall where witnesses reported hearing gunfire. She says no one was wounded and no shell casings were found. Some people were hurt as they ran from the mall.
IRBIL, Iraq (AP) — Iraqi Kurdish forces have retaken five villages east of Islamic State-held Mosul in an operation launched early Sunday morning, according to an official statement. The Kurdish region Security Council, an umbrella group of the multiple security forces in Iraq's Kurdish region, says the operation aims to "clear several more villages" and is "one of many shaping operations" that will increase pressure on Mosul.
