NEW YORK (AP) — The leader of a New York City mosque and an associate are dead after being fatally shot in the back of the head during a brazen daylight attack as they left a mosque following afternoon prayers. It happened in the Ozone Park section of Queens shortly before 2 p.m. today. Police say no motive has been established and there is no reason to believe the men were shot because they were Muslim. No suspects are in custody.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The police chief in Raleigh. North Carolina, says investigators are still trying to determine whether there was a shooting at a busy mall where witnesses reported hearing gunfire. She says no one' in custody and no one was wounded. She says people heard what sounded like gunshots and investigators are examining all possibilities. She also says no shell casings have been found. Some people were hurt as they ran from the mall.
AMITE, La. (AP) — Authorities in Louisiana say another person has died as a result of the dangerous flooding that occurred following sudden, heavy rains. The state's death toll now stands at three. The St. Helena Sheriff's Office says a woman's body was recovered today from a river. The Coast Guard says it rescued five people from flood waters in the Baton Rouge area today. They were among more than 1,000 people who have been rescued.
HATCH, N.M. (AP) — Dona Ana County Sheriff's deputies are taking over public safety duties in a New Mexico village following the fatal shooting of one of its eight officers. Deputies will respond to calls in Hatch while local officers mourn the killing of 33-year-old Jose Chavez. The officer was killed Friday after pulling over two Ohio fugitives. Two suspects are in custody.
MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Donald Trump is making an unusual foray into deep-blue Connecticut. The GOP presidential nominee is holding a rally tonight in Fairfield, an affluent suburb north of New York City. Earlier, he appeared at a fundraiser. Trump says he's "making a big play for the state of Connecticut" even as he acknowledges that most Republicans don't compete there. Nearly 5,000 people have filled a gymnasium on the campus on Sacred Heart University.
