RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — American tennis player Madison Keys has failed to win the bronze in the Olympics. She was beaten in the bronze medal match by two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIHT'-oh-vuh), 7-5, 2-6, 6-2. In the gold medal match later today Australian Open champ Angelique Kerber squares off with Puerto Rico's Monica Puig (PWEEG).

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The New York Times is reporting that the Soviet Union had a state-sponsored doping program in place ahead of the 1984 Olympics before it boycotted the games in Los Angeles. The Times says a document detailing the program was obtained from a former chief doctor for the Soviet track and field team.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A year ago the Washington Nationals acquired closer Jonathan Papelbon with the hope that he would lock down the back end of the bullpen. It didn't happen and today he was released. The six-time All-Star was replaced as the Nats closer last month when they traded for Mark Melancon (muh-LAN'-suhn).

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Eagles rookie quarterback Carson Wentz has a hairline fracture in his ribs. He was hurt in Thursday night's exhibition game with Tampa Bay and there is no timetable for his return. At first coach Doug Pederson said Wentz needed treatment and would return to practice Sunday but a CT scan revealed the fracture.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Pro football fans in Los Angeles are ready for the return of the NFL to their city. Tonight in the L.A. Coliseum the newly arrived Rams are playing host to the Cowboys in a preseason game. The Rams relocated from St. Louis to Los Angeles in the offseason.
