First and foremost, if your wife asks, "Do I look fat in this dress?" you should never, ever say, "Well..., fatter than what?"
No joke, this is just one of the many true stories from my coaching office. I don't know if this guy ended up with a black eye or if his wife was reduced to a heap of emotion crumpled on the floor. Either way, I'm sure this conversation didn't have a good ending.
One of my basic rules is to listen for understanding beyond the words. When your spouse talks to you, there is usually more meaning in the words than appears on the surface. This is where we get back into the differences between men and women. This is again, one of the reasons I teach about these differences; not to pull us apart from each other by showing us how different we are, but rather, to bring more connection by understanding the differences and therefore being able to bridge the gap.
Ladies, please just realize this is our best attempt to stretch our brain function by stopping the literal response and respond with our heart. Please be gentle on us and give us a pat on the back and a kiss on the cheek for our efforts.
